GOTS

What it is about

The Global Organic Textile Standard, also known as GOTS, was developed by experienced industry members and certification experts. The aim of this collaboration was to define requirements for sustainable textile that would be recognized worldwide. Since its introduction in 2006 GOTS already has demonstrated its practical feasibility. Moreover, it is supported by the consumption growth of organic fibers, and by the remarkable demand for unified processing criteria from the industry and retail sector.

GOTS ensures the organic status of textiles from harvesting of the raw materials through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing all the way to labelling, in order to provide credible assurance to the consumer.

Focus of GOTS

  • Recycled content
  • Identification and traceability of the organic content in textile along the entire chain of custody
  • Social and environmental practices according to the ILO conventions
  • Define and uphold restrictions in the use of chemicals

The standard covers the processing, manufacturing, packaging, labelling, trading and distribution of all textiles made from at least 70% certified organic natural fibers. The final fiber products may include, but are not limited to, yarns, fabrics, clothes and home textiles. However, this standard does not set criteria for leather products.

Control Union is a recognized certification body, which certifies nearly 2000 textile processing facilities each year, including ginning, spinning, weaving/knitting, dyeing & printing and stitching. This is more than two thirds of all GOTS certified facilities in the world. Additionally, we are able to assess textile dyes, auxiliaries and chemical inputs that are used in GOTS production process.
